Every restaurant in Sydney with a tricolour on the awning will tell you it is authentic. It is the easiest claim in hospitality to make and the hardest one to prove. Which is precisely why Italy created a way of testing it.
What Is the Ospitalità Italiana Certification?
Ospitalità Italiana is a certification promoted by ISNART — the Istituto Nazionale Ricerche Turistiche, Italy's national tourism research institute — in collaboration with Unioncamere and the worldwide network of Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad. Its purpose is narrow and useful: to identify the restaurants beyond Italy's borders that genuinely preserve and promote Italian cooking and Italian hospitality, rather than merely borrowing the name.
In Australia the programme is run by the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Australia (ICCIAUS). A restaurant does not apply and receive a logo; it is assessed, and the certification is granted for a fixed term that has to be renewed. The mark itself is a gold Q — for quality — above the words Ospitalità Italiana · Quality Approved, with the year of validity beneath.
How a Restaurant Is Assessed
The certification is granted following an evaluation that looks at five things in particular:
- the authenticity of the culinary offering;
- the quality of the ingredients;
- the professionalism of the service;
- the dining experience as a whole;
- the restaurant's commitment to representing the traditions and values of Italian gastronomy.
Read that list again and you will notice what is missing from it. There is no category for design, no points for a wine list assembled by a consultant, nothing about press coverage. It is a test of whether a kitchen is doing the ordinary Italian things properly, day after day — which is a far more demanding standard than it sounds.
It is also, as it happens, a fair description of what La Botte D'Oro has been doing on Marion Street since 1977. The pasta is made by hand in the kitchen rather than delivered in boxes. The pizza comes out of a real wood-fired oven. The recipes came from Italy with the family and have not been rewritten to suit a trend. Nearly half a century of that is what an assessor is looking for.
The Certificate, Presented in Sydney
The letter confirming the award is dated 20 July 2026 and signed by Roberto Tagliaferri, Secretary General of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Australia. It congratulates La Botte D'Oro on the 2026/2027 certification and describes it as "a testament to your dedication, professionalism and passion for sharing authentic Italian cuisine and hospitality with the Australian community".
You do not have to take our word for any of this. The programme keeps a public register of every certified restaurant in the world, and La Botte D'Oro's entry is there, on Ospitalità Italiana's own site.
The certificate itself was presented on the evening of 26 August 2026, at a Chamber event in Sydney, and collected by chef Gabriele Franco on behalf of the family and the kitchen. We are glad to have it — not because a plaque improves anybody's dinner, but because it is the only honest answer to the question every Italian restaurant gets asked and almost none can settle.

What It Means When You Book a Table
Practically speaking, very little changes. The same family runs the same dining room, and the pasta is made by hand exactly as it was before the certificate arrived.
What the mark gives you is a way to choose. Sydney has hundreds of Italian restaurants and no shortage of confident claims about which are the real thing; our own guide to finding an authentic Italian restaurant in Sydney walks through what to look for. Ospitalità Italiana is one of the few signals in that whole landscape that does not come from the restaurant itself — it comes from an Italian institution whose entire job is to know the difference.
It sits alongside the two recognitions our guests gave us directly: the Local Business Awards Inner West Winner 2025, voted by the community, and the OpenTable Diners' Choice 2026, drawn from real diner reviews. One from Italy, two from Sydney. We are quietly pleased about the combination.

The Bottom Line
A certificate does not cook anything. What it does is settle an argument: after nearly fifty years of doing this the same way, an Italian institution assessed the restaurant and said yes. The best use of that is still to come and eat — the menu is where it shows up, and the contact page has our hours and how to find us.
